Domain
Names
A
domain consists of a set of network addresses. Every computer
that hosts data on internet has a unique numerical address.
For example, the numerical address for our site
is 216.55.169.37, but very few people want to remember
long strings of numbers, for which Domain Name System (DNS)
was invented. DNS correlates a numerical address to a word. To
access our website you can type its number in the address box
of the web browser or you can use 1uphost.com, which is called
as the domain name.
This
domain name is organized in levels. The top level identifies
geographic or purpose (for example, the nation that the domain
covers or a category such as "commercial"). The
second level identifies a unique place within the top level
domain. and is, in fact, equivalent to a unique address on the
Internet (an IP address). Lower levels of domain may also be
used.
For
the domain name www.1Uphost.com.
The "com" part of the domain name reflects the
purpose of the organization or entity (in this example,
"commercial") and is called the top-level domain
name. The "1Uphost" part of the domain name defines
the organization or entity and together with the top-level is
called the second-level domain name.
Second-level
domain names must be unique on the Internet and registered
with one of the ICANN-accredited registrars for the COM, NET,
and ORG top-level domains. On the Web, the domain name is that
part of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that tells a domain
name server using the DNS whether and where to forward a
request for a Web page. The domain name is mapped to an IP
address More than one domain name can be mapped to the same IP
address. This allows multiple individuals, businesses, and
organizations to have separate Internet identities while
sharing the same Internet server.
